I signed on as first mate under Captain Davis
A disgraced barrister with no place to go
We sailed five years and our fortune made us
And we'd never even thought much of Maracaibo
Though we'd all be judged terribly in Maracaibo

One day Davis said we should split the plunder
We had ten treasure galleons fully loaded in tow
As a storm blew up, as we heard the thunder
Davis told us turn southward to Maracaibo
We'd drink rum with the other scum in Maracaibo

As soon as we docked, Captain Davis was gone
The guard opened fire and blood began to flow
Davis split our gold with the governor at dawn
By noon I was prisoner in Maracaibo
Going stale in the Spanish jail in Maracaibo

For two years I starved in that deadly prison
My comrades all dead, and hunger kills slow
But I made my escape, like the sun I am risen
After two years of midnight in Maracaibo
Fighting cats to eat rates in old Maracaibo

And now I sail back , the harbor I can see
Five hundred killers will help me pay what I owe
Let the devil claim me, let me shipmates shame me
