He Was There

She was sitting in class, painting her nails
He watched her every move, he could tell
She never knew he was there
She wore the latest styles and knew what was cool
He was tall and shy, the smartest in the school
She didn't care
He looked forward to seeing her every day
At lunch time, and as he sat down
She would leave
On a dance floor, and lost in the crowd
He got the courage to hold out his hand and smile
She said "In your dreams"

He was there
She hardly noticed
He was invisible
And not the coolest guy
He was there
And he mattered
All she had to do
Was just return a smile

Ten years and three kids later
She was working in a grocery store
Her marriage falling apart at the seams
Tall & shy turned into dark & handsome
A wealthy lawyer with all the answers
Every woman's dream

One day she passed him on the street
He stole her heart instantly
She stared in disbelief
She was wearing worn out clothes
Her kids were screaming and out of control
And she smiled but he said "In your dreams"

He was there
