Usted es viejo, Padre William», dijo el joven
"You are old, Father William," the young man said,
Y tu cabello se ha vuelto muy blanco
"And your hair has become very white;
Y sin embargo, incesantemente te paras de cabeza
And yet you incessantly stand on your head-
¿Crees que, a tu edad, es correcto?
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

En mi juventud —respondió el padre William a su hijo
"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
Temía que pudiera dañar el cerebro
"I feared it might injure the brain;
Pero ahora que estoy perfectamente seguro de que no tengo ninguna
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Por qué, lo hago una y otra vez
Why, I do it again and again."

Eres viejo -dijo la juventud-. Como mencioné anteriormente
"You are old," said the youth, "As I mentioned before,
Y han crecido más raramente grasa
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Sin embargo, usted dio una vuelta mortal en la puerta
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door-
Orad, ¿cuál es la razón de eso?
Pray, what is the reason of that?"

En mi juventud —dijo el sabio, mientras agitaba sus cerraduras grisas
"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,

"I kept all my limbs very supple

"You are old," said the youth, "And your jaws are too weak

For anything tougher than suet;
Sin embargo, terminaste el ganso, con los huesos y el pico
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak-
Oren, ¿cómo se las arregló para hacerlo?
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

En mi juventud», dijo su padre, «me llevé a la ley
"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law,

And argued each case with my wife;

Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose-
¿Qué te hizo tan astutamente inteligente?
What made you so awfully clever?"

He respondido tres preguntas, y eso es suficiente
"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Dijo su padre: «¡No te des aires!
Said his father; "don't give yourself airs!
¿Crees que puedo escuchar todo el día esas cosas?
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
¡Fuera, o te patearé por las escaleras!
Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs!"
