من قلبي سلامٌ لِبيروت

And kisses to the sea and the homes
وقُبَلٌ لِلبحرِ والبيوت
waqubalun lilbaḥri walbuyūt
To a rock that looks like the face of an old sailor
لِصخرةٍ كأنّها وجهُ بحّارٍ قديمِ
lisakhratin ka'annahā wajhu baḥḥārin qadīm

It’s the spirit of the people, wine
هيَ مِن روحِ الشّعبِ خمرٌ
hiya min rūḥi al-sha'bi khamr
It’s from their sweat, bread and jasmine
هيَ مِن عرقِهِ خُبزٌ ويَاسَمين
hiya min 'araqihi khubzun wa-yāsamīn
So how did its taste turn to fire and smoke?
فكيفَ صارَ طعمُها طعمَ نارٍ ودُخانِ؟
fakayfa ṣāra ṭa'muhā ṭa'ma nārin wa-dukhān

مجدٌ مِن رَمادٍ لِبيروت

من دمٍ لِولدٍ حُمِلَ فوقَ يدِها

My city extinguished its lantern
أطفأَتْ مدينتي قنديلَها
'aṭfa'at madīnatī qandīlahā
Closed its door
أغلقَتْ بابَها
aghlaqat bābahā
Now it’s alone in the evening
أصبحَتْ في المساء وحدَها
'aṣbaḥat fī al-masā'i waḥdahā
Alone with the night
وحدَها وليلُ
